Through the ages exterior as well as interior doors have always been made of wood. The wood used then used to be heavy hardwood of quite a thickness because these doors were not meant to look good, they were meant to protect. Yet, the beauty of the wood itself brought beauty and grace to the doors. Contemporary doors on the other hand are not only made of wood anymore – they can be made from hardwood, softwood, plywood, glass, metal, etc.
Exterior doors are generally quite ornate and beautiful because they are not only functional they are also the first impression people have of your home and of your taste. That is the reason why people still have beautifully carved and polished oak doors and redwood doors. These are either painted in different colors to match your home’s décor or are given a veneer finish thus enhancing the beauty of the door. Bespoke doors have also become quite popular in the market these days.
The futuristic design and the newest trend is to incorporate metal and glass into the frame. Glass is used, in many places, to make doors leading to the patio and yards in the house. Even the terrace and balcony doors are sometimes made of glass. The reason for this is that glass allows a lot of light into the room making the room brighter and more appealing. The increased light also allows the room to look a lot more airy and spacious.
Combinations of metal and glass doors are also quite a hit. Most of these combination designs use a stainless steel frame or a stainless steel design with the empty spaces filled in by glass. This glass that is set into the metal frames can be clear or frosted glass. The frosted glass sometimes has its own designs frosted into it to help improve the beauty of the door.
It is noteworthy to say that these metal and glass doors though quite beautiful for yard and terrace doors are never generally used as the front door to the home because that door needs to be one that is not very easy to break through. People on budgets also do opt for plastic doors sometimes. These are durable and quite strong and unlike the wooden or metallic doors they do not require a lot of maintenance. The protection quotient though is considerably less when you compare plastic doors to wooden doors.
